World Fair Play Day returns this year to promote the ethical values of sport.
On Wednesday, 7 September 2022, World Fair Play Day will take place in Brussels, an initiative of the sporting world that aims to promote Fair Play and the ethical values of sport. World Fair Play Day is a collaboration between Panathlon International, the CIFP (International Fair Play Committee) and the EFPM (European Fair Play Movement) and is an event that has taken place every year - since 2013 - in French-speaking Belgium. 7 September was not a random choice: on this date, in 1963, the founding members, of what would become the International Fair Play Committee, met for the first time.
World Fair Play Day aims to demonstrate that Fair Play can be promoted through both large-scale operations and simple actions. The aim is to make this Day an authentic celebration of Fair Play as a real component of education in sport, society and life itself. That is why we are pleased to invite all clubs to take part in this campaign. They can participate by sending in photos and/or videos depicting a Fair Play gesture, or an initiative related to this issue, to contribute to the affirmation of the event in an increasingly solid way.
We also enclose the Manifesto to be signed - for those who haven’t signed it yet - and sent back to the General Secretariat of PI (info@panathlon.net). Your material (videos and/or photos) will be presented in Brussels on World Fair Play Day.
The International Commission composed of President Pierre Zappelli, International Board Member Eugenio Guglielmino and the delegate of the South American Clubs Mavì Tizon, met by video conference to discuss the projects received from the Clubs regarding the Project launched in 2021 "Club + Sensitive to Sport × All". The aim of the project was to encourage clubs to be more open to the weaker sections of society, awarding the actions and projects that best represented this aim. The first prize of EUR 3,000 went to the Club Novara for the “Climbing Workshop” project, followed ex-equo by the clubs of: Buenos Aires, La Malpensa and Wallonie-Bruxelles for their projects: Hockey Lessons, Sports Lessons, Special Olympic post Covid. They will receive a contribution of €1,000 from P.I.
Congratulations to the winners and thanks to the clubs of Biella, Clitunno, Jau, Modena, Ozieri, Pontremoli, Torino Olimpica and Trento that participated and activated important projects in their territories on this topic.
The International Board met online to appoint the new President of the CCSE in the person of IB Member Eugenio Guglielmino who succeeds Canadian Elaine Cook who had resigned from the position assigned to her in 2016 for work reasons. The President and the International Board, while thanking Elaine for her great commitment, now welcomes the new President who will be flanked by Brazilian Antonio Carlos Bramante and Swiss Piermarco Zen-Ruffinen.
The new Commission is already at work to organise a Round Table on the topic of “The Effects of Conflicts and Politics in Sport” on 15 September in Rome at the Aula Magna of the Olympic Training Center “Giulio Onesti”.
The Flambeau d’Or ceremony will take place in Rome on 16th September at 3.00 p.m. The International Board has decided to award this important recognition to the IOC President, Thomas Bach, who will receive it at the CONI Hall of Honour. The Prize, established in 1972, aims to identify important personalities in the world of sport who have honoured and promulgated the fundamental principles of the affirmation of the ethical and cultural values of sport. The award is normally given every four years. In 2018 the prize was awarded to French skier Jean Claude Killy.

Dear President of Panathlon Club,
Dear Panathlon International Members,
As informed previously, Panathlon International is participating in an Erasmus+ project, which is being funded by the European Union. This project is called “Sport Against Match-Fixing". In this project, Panathlon International is joined by other relevant sporting organisations from different countries and different sports.
The goal of the project is to raise awareness to key topics related to the prevention of match-fixing and the consequences and risks of this unethical and unfair phenomenon, especially considering the negative impact it can unleash on the career of grassroot athletes. To tackle this, this Project is seeking to, amongst other, develop a web-based educational which will assist with the main objective, which is to prevent the engangement with match-fixing practices.
This project is expected to last until 2024 and Panathlon International is actively involved in the delivery of set objectives.
As Clubs and Panathlon Members, we are now seeking your assistance and for your active contribution so that these objectives can be reached. Consequently, we need your assistance with:
1) the identification of best practices that your Club/ you have developed related to the prevention of match-fixing (e.g. a Session that your Club/ you have presented and/or a result/idea launched/implemented). This can also be best practices that you have identified and that you think could be worth exploring. We're more than available to collect any ideas and suggestions.
2) the identification of sports persons (e.g. athletes, coaches, referees, managers) which are aware about the topic of match-fixing and that could participate in an anonymised questionnaire/interview? Preferably, it would be great that these sports persons are Panathlon International members.
Please submit your answers to general.secretariat@panathlon.net until 22/08/2022, 23.59 (deadline).
We look forward to your active collaboration and to keep you updated on the progress of the SAMF Project.
Please also make sure to follow the social media of the SAMF Project, which you can find below:
Thank you and best regards,

On 21 June, Jean-Michel Saive (President of the Belgian Olympic Committee), Cédric Van Branteghem (CEO- Belgian Olympic Committee) and Patrick Van Campenhout (member EOC commission EU and International relations) were in Brussels to attend the EOC EU Office's '6th European Evening of Sports'.
The theme of the evening was "The future of major sports events in Europe" or the current challenges of European and international sport.
Speakers were:
- Thomas Bach, President of the International Olympic Committee
- Mariya Gabriel, European Commissioner for Innovation, Research, Culture, Education and Youth, responsible for Sport
- Spyros Capralos, President of the European Olympic Committees
- Andrew Parsons, President of the International Paralympic Committee
- Emma Terho, President of the IOC Athletes' Commission
- Glen Killane, Executive Director of Eurovision Sport, European Broadcasting Union
The panel was moderated by Olympian Sabine Appelmans.
Patrick has done a lot of networking in this European Olympic Family to promote Panathlon International.
The historic evening culminated in a Memorandum of Understanding between the European Olympic Committee represented by its President, Mr Spyros Capralos, and the European Union Sport Department represented by Ms Mariya Gabriel. With this document, an agreement was made for these two entities to work very closely together on all facets of the sporting landscape, such as, social environment, health, youth, education of the sporting environment.
On October 16, 1968, Tommie Smith and John Carlos showed their raised, black-gloved, fists at the Olympic podium ceremony in Mexico. The silent gesture became an icon in the Afro-American civil rights movement and in the fight against oppression of disadvantaged groups around the world. This peaceful but unequivocal protest, six months after the murder of Martin Luther King, made the Black Power movement front-page news all over the world. For Tommie Smith and John Carlos, the consequences were dramatic: They were heavily criticized in their own country, received death threats and were excluded as athletes. This was for them the start of a life as activists and role models for many generations, including the current Black Lives Matter movement.
With this honorary doctorate, KU Leuven honors their moral courage and their nonviolent resistance in the fight against social injustice. The official ceremony will be preceded by an optional Round Table discussion.
